She Will Be Loved
Coraline smiles as she wipes the make-up from her shoulder revealing the fleur-de-lis tattoo. It’s going better than she could have dared hope. Both Mick and Josef have been unable to sense her Vampire nature. She allows herself a small smile of triumph as she thinks of their confusion. The Morgan persona is perfect; a mask that fools even the oldest of Vampires. She is part of the mortal world now and they have no reason to doubt her.
This evening, her routine has one last step. She walks silently into the kitchen. She can feel the Vampire in her hovering around the edges. It is demanding freedom. Willfully, she pushes it down. There is too much at stake to give in; she has started on this path and she means to see it through.
She retrieves the elixir from the refrigerator. The blood she has drained from the real Morgan provides the base. She tries not to think of what drives her to this duplicity but thoughts of Mick are not to be denied. He should have loved her. She should not have to resort to trickery to show him how much he needs her.
But she misjudged him and he betrayed her. She escaped and searched the world for the means to bind Mick to her. The helpful Vampire chemist would share the secret of false mortality with no one else.
Moving into the living room she settles onto the couch. Removing the bandages from her arm, she prepares herself for the injection. The entry wound does not heal. It is a constant reminder of what she has given up to play this game.
Depressing the plunger, she injects the hated substance and waits. She can feel the heat coursing through her veins as the mortal blood concoction mixes with her own.
These injections are a painful but necessary endeavor to keep her true nature hidden. A wave of nausea breaks over her and signals the replacement of the Vampire Coraline with the mortal Morgan. She can feel the color of the world draining away: it seems dimmer, slower. Her limbs feel heavy and awkward. “Why would anyone choose to be mortal?” she wonders aloud. “Why would they want to be only half alive?”
She thinks about the little blonde who hopes to steal Mick from her. She laughs quietly. That mousy thing will be easily dispatched but not before she’s sure it will devastate Mick. She hasn’t decided yet if it would hurt Mick more to turn Beth or simply kill her.
Either way, mortal Morgan will be there to help him through his pain. Slowly, as his life falls apart, she’ll be there to help him pick up the pieces. He will love her again. She can hardly wait for that moment when she reveals her true self to him. He won’t be able to abandon her again. His connection to her is forged in fire and she can not be denied. She smiles as she contemplates the future. It will be a slow, beautiful descent into the darkness together.
