Summary: Jo comes to Seacouver for the first time

Coming Home

Jo approached the door to Joe’s bar with trepidation. It was barely past noon and Richie had assured her the place would be empty except for Ellen and Joe.

She hadn’t talked to her mother in over a year. There was no point. Every conversation had degenerated into a screaming match with Jo reasserting her desire to keep hunting and Ellen demanding she come to her senses. Jo had cut off all contact believing there was nothing left to say. Then she’d met Richie Ryan, who informed her that Ellen was now living in Washington State working with an organization called the Watchers. Immortals had entered the territory of the hunters and the game had changed.

That didn’t mean her mother had changed. Jo wasn’t looking forward to the confrontation she was sure was lurking on the other side of that door.

How had she let Richie talk her into this visit? One kiss from him and she had agreed to this misguided trip to Seacouver. She smiled at the memory, Still, it was a damn good kiss.

Richie stepped up beside her and laid a comforting hand on the small of her back. “I’m right here. If it doesn’t go well then I give you permission to shoot me.”

Jo chuckled with out meeting his gaze. “Don’t think I won’t take you up on that offer.”

“Oh, I have no doubt.” He moved passed her to open the door and usher her inside.

She took two steps inside and froze at the sight of her mother stocking the shelves in the empty bar. It was so familiar even in this unfamiliar place.

“Hey Ellen, I got a surprise for you,” Richie announced as he grabbed Jo’s hand and dragged her forward.

Ellen looked up and the bottle she’d been holding hit the ground, shattering into a dozen pieces. She didn’t move, just stared at Jo like she was a ghost.

Jo pulled her hand from Richie’s and stood her ground, grim determination holding her in place.

“Jo,” Ellen squeaked out. “Is it really you?”

She nodded.

Ellen flew around the bar and engulfed her in a fierce hug. Jo could feel her mother’s tears on her cheek as she held her close. Jo returned the embrace snuffing back her own tears; refusing to give in to her emotions. Still, she hadn’t realized how much she’d missed her mother until this very moment.

The two pulled apart, but still standing close. “Look at me, I’m a mess,” Ellen laughed ruefully as she swiped at her tears. A grey haired man had come up behind Ellen and held out a cloth to her.

Uncomfortable with her mother’s uncharacteristic display of emotion, Jo turned her attention to the man. “You must be Joe,” she said.

“Yep, Joe Dawson.” He held out his hand, a big welcoming smile on his face. “And you’re Ellen’s wayward daughter Jo.”

Jo smiled in return. “Guess she told you all about me.”

“Only the good things.”

“Must have been a short conversation,” Jo quipped.

The statement obviously made Joe uncomfortable as he looked to Ellen for a response but Ellen was in the midst of fawning over Richie.

“I don’t know how you did it but I am really grateful,” she told Richie as she pulled him into a warm embrace.

Jo got the impression this wasn’t the first time her mother had hugged Richie. He was watching her over Ellen’s shoulder; his eyes asking her if she was ok.

Jo nodded; not really sure if she was. She was still waiting for the argument that would come once the euphoria of the reunion passed.

“Anything for you, Ellen,” he said as they broke their embrace.

“What happened in Idaho?” Ellen asked.

Richie shrugged. “Jo was there and we worked together.”

A frown cross her mother’s face. Here it comes Jo thought, the lecture about hunting. Instead, Ellen encouraged Richie to continue with his story.

“She was amazing, Ellen. Really I don’t know why you’re so worried. She’s a really good hunter.” Richie continued to talk excitedly about her skill.

Jo blushed at his praise. Still, he did leave out the part how the vampire had tried to use her as bait and Richie had gotten shot. Not that it mattered since he was Immortal. She was truly touched by the picture he was painting to her mother.

Was it possible that Richie understood and respected her decisions? He barely knew her and yet it seemed he ‘got’ her.

“I’d hunt with her anytime.” Richie finished his recitation of the events by sending a huge smile her way.

Ellen shook her head. “You think I’d be used to such strange coincidences.” She reached up to squeeze Richie shoulder. “Thank you for watching her back and bringing her home.”

Ellen turned back to Jo.

“Well go ahead, say your piece.” Jo was ready for the speech.

Instead her mother reached up to stroke her cheek. “Is hunting what you really want to do with your life?”

Jo felt her jaw drop and Ellen chuckled as she moved her hand from Jo’s cheek to tap her chin up. “Don’t look so shocked, baby girl, things have changed; I’ve changed,” she added quietly. “If you want to hunt, you should hunt.”

Jo flung herself at Ellen, hugging her with a joy she hadn’t felt in years, “Yes! This is what I want.” Jo pulled back suddenly. “You were serious. You approve.”

Ellen waggled a finger at Jo. “I didn’t say I approved but I’m smart enough to realize that after all this time, I can’t change you,” Ellen admitted. “I just want you to stay in touch. Knowing you’re out there hunting all alone is not something I want to lay awake at night worrying about any more.”

Jo cocked an eyebrow at her. “But you said - ”

Ellen held up a hand to quiet Jo and glanced toward Richie. “You mean what you said about hunting with her?”

“Anytime,” he confirmed.

“Now wait a minute,” Jo protested. “Are you ordering Richie to follow me around?”

“No, I’m asking you two to consider becoming partners,” Ellen explained. “I told you, no one should hunt alone and Richie has an advantage.”

Jo laughed. “You mean because he’s an Immortal.”

“You told her,” Joe snapped at Richie. “It won’t be much of a secret any more if everyone keeps blabbing about it.”

“Now don’t get all pissy, Joe,” Richie said. “I had to tell her. She saw me die. That’s a tough thing to explain to a hunter without sharing the truth.”

“I think you left that part out of your story,” Ellen said, she stood hand on hips clearly demanding an explanation.

“It’s just like you suggested, Mom,” Jo said coming to Richie’s defense. “Richie let the vampire shoot him so that I could take the bastard out.”

Ellen smiled. “I guess I was right about you two partnering up.”

Richie looked at Jo, a twinkle in his eyes. “Whata ya say? Partners?” He held out his hand

Jo hesitated as she swung her gaze to Ellen who was nodding her approval. It wasn’t as hard as she’d thought to admit that maybe her mother was right about this. Having an Immortal watch her back would only make the job easier.

Her decision made, she grasped Richie’s hand. “Partners,” she repeated. It seemed coming home hadn’t been such a bad idea after all.
