Bridge Between Worlds: Chapter 1
JD stood admiring his new car. Days ago he’d graduated from high school and returned home to find the midnight blue classic car sitting in the driveway - a gift from his Uncles Dean and Richie. He was overwhelmed by the gesture, especially once he’d opened the trunk to find it outfitted with everything a hunter could need.
Now he was moments away from taking off on his first hunt in his own ’67 Impala. Only this hunt wasn’t supernatural in nature. He and Uncle Richie were heading off on the pretext of a haunting in Nebraska but the objective of their trip was a bit more mundane though potentially just as dangerous; they were going to find Chloe.
After the encounters with Holly, his cousin from a parallel reality, JD had decided Uncle Dean deserved the kind of happiness his double obviously enjoyed with Chloe Sullivan. He had tried to broach the topic with his uncle but Dean had cut him off at the knees and threatened bodily harm if he ever mentioned Chloe again.
So, he followed the only route left open to him and enlisted Holly’s help to track down Chloe. Now that summer was here, the plans that they had developed were about to be put in motion.
There was no way his dad was going to let JD hunt on his own and it had taken a lot of fancy foot work to convince Uncle Dean that he wanted to try his first adult hunt without him. It had been Holly’s idea to convince Richie to be their accomplice. The Immortal was a reluctant participant until the two teens had found out that Richie was still in contact with Chloe. Then the man caved like a flan in a cupboard - the threat of Dean finding out convinced the Immortal that his life was safer on the road with his nephew and “niece.”
JD tossed his duffle into the trunk and turned to face his family for the final goodbyes.
Katie handed him a cooler. “Some sandwiches and snacks for the road,” she explained before she pulled him into a hug. “Be careful,” she whispered in his ear. “I love you.”
“I love you too and don’t worry,” he pulled back from the hug, “I’ll let Uncle Richie do all the heavy lifting.”
“You better,” she laughed, giving his arm a final squeeze before stepping back to allow Sam to have his moment. While his dad was still convinced that someday JD would give up hunting and head off to college, his mom had some how always understood that this was his destiny as a Winchester. Ironic, then, that his first official hunt as an adult wasn’t a hunt at all.
“Got everything?” Sam asked. Things were still a little awkward between them since JD had tossed that final college acceptance letter in the trash and he wasn’t sure exactly how to get past it.
JD nodded as he shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his jeans. He suddenly found himself engulfed in his dad’s embrace. He didn’t resist enjoying the tacit support that the contact gave him.
They broke apart smiling. “I still wish you’d let Dean come along.”
“Then how would that be any different then dozens of other hunts I’d been on?” JD had explained his sideways logic to them before. “Besides, you always said Uncle Richie was the responsible one.”
Sam rolled his eyes. “It isn’t much of a contest. Seriously,” he said his tone losing its mirth, “Be careful.”
“I will. You won’t even miss me with all the rest of the rug rats taking up your attention.”
“Not true,” Sam said staring into JD’s eyes.
JD flinched a little at the raw emotion he saw there. A part of him wanting to protest that he was too old for this kind of emotional goodbye, instead he just nodded enjoying the moment of connection with his dad.
He finally broke eye contact and looked down the road. “Richie should be here any minute.”
As if on cue, the Impala turned the corner and pulled up at the curb. JD watched as Dean and Richie exited the car, obviously in the middle of a heated argument.
“That makes no sense, Rich.”
“Let it go, dude. You’re just jealous he wants to go with me instead of you,” Richie teased and catching site of their audience addressed JD. “Ready to go partner?”
Dean charged up to his brother. “You aren’t going to let him go like this, are you?”
JD held his breath. One Winchester he could convince, but if his dad threw in with Dean, there was no way he could fight both of them.
“Have to let him go sometime.” Sam smiled over Dean’s shoulder at his son and winked.
JD felt his hopes rise. His dad got it, really got it. Guess it wasn’t that hard to get past their disagreements after all.
“You’re supposed to be on my side. JD needs me.”
“Actually, I was referring to Richie.”
“Sam’s right, Dean. It’s time to let your little one fly the nest on his own,” Katie added, trying and failing to keep the smirk out of her voice.
“You two deserve each other.” Dean threw his hands up in frustration and stalked back to Richie. “If you –”
Richie held up a hand. “I know, I know,” he said in a singsong voice. “If I don’t bring him back in one piece you’ll take my head…Blah, blah, blah. I know the drill.”
JD had to cover his mouth to stop from laughing in Uncle Dean’s face. He was flustered and getting no support from any one. With final glare at Richie, and a few good luck platitudes thrown at JD, Dean stormed back to the Impala.

Holly’s Reality
“I don’t like this,” Andrew said as he stood in the doorway of the guest room at Wayne Manor watching his sister repack the bag she had recently unpacked for Bruce’s benefit.
“You don’t have to like it. You just have to cover for me.”
“Covering for you means that I support this endeavor and I don’t.”
Holly zipped up her bag and faced her brother. “Please, Andrew. JD and I have been planning this for a long time. It’s not a hunt. It’s not dangerous. Besides I told you, Richie’s coming so quit worrying.”
“I have no way to contact you,” he pushed. “What if something happens?”
She’d already anticipated this argument. “That’s why we brought the mirror here. Just step through and find Mule. He’s on board and if anything happens he’ll call you.”
“Call me?” He eyed her skeptically. “You find a cell phone that works between realities?”
“Not exactly.” Holly knew the idea of a potential new technology would get her brother interested. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that exciting. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a cell phone and handed it to him.
Andrew turned it over and flipped it open. “No signal.”
“So smart and yet so dumb,” Holly teased. “It only works in their reality. Mule has one from me that only works here.”
He was impressed and Holly smiled. “See nothing to worry about. So -” she paused waiting for him to get with the program.
“Fine,” he sighed. “I’ll cover for you but if you’re gone more than two weeks, I’m telling dad everything and we’re coming to get you.”
“Yes, sir!” Holly gave him a mock salute, before moving closer to give him a quick hug. “Thanks, Andrew. You won’t regret this.”
“Already do, but it’s not like I have a choice.”
****************************************************
JD’s Reality
Holly stepped out of JD’s closet expecting to find him waiting for her.
“Finally,” said a world weary voice. Mule unfolded himself from JD’s bed and, before she could even say hello, had shoved her out of the room. “Everyone is out front saying good bye. We have to hurry.”
“I’m not late,” Holly protested. “And quit shoving.”
“You are late! And if you want my help, I get to shove all I want,” he groused before giving her another nudge. “Now move it.”
“JD know that you’re this bossy?” Holly asked taking her time going down the steps. “And I wasn’t late. Time must flow differently here.”
“Yeah, I’m sure that’s it.” She could practically hear Mule rolling his eyes behind her. “You should show a little more appreciation. I’m the one that’s gonna get in trouble if we get caught.”
Holly couldn’t help but giggle at the similarity in tone to Andrew’s laments when he had been coerced into covering for her.
They reached the back door without incident. “You have my undying gratitude, Mule.” At his skeptical look she added, “Seriously.” She smiled at her cousin; she’d come to think of him that way over the months they’d been in contact.
“Just try not to get into too much trouble,” he said finally relaxing, a little.
“It’s going to be ok,” Holly assured him. She wanted to mention that she’d already had this conversation with her brother but didn’t. She figured that JD hadn’t given Mule anytime to share his concerns; typical big brother brush-off.
“You have clearly not spent enough time with JD.” Mule deadpanned. “Andrew does know how to reach me?”
Holly nodded trying not to laugh at such serious anxiety coming off the fifteen-year-old. “He’s got the phone and will call in the cavalry if need be.”
“Good! I figured I’d check in with him with regularly so he wouldn’t worry, which means,” he pointed a finger at her, “that you and JD have to check in with me.”
“Understood.” She was tempted to salute him as she’d done with Andrew. “Anything else, boss?”
Mule smiled at the moniker as he opened the door. “Yes, be careful and find her.”
She leaned over and planted a quick kiss on his cheek, she wasn’t sure why but he was just so darn adorable when awash with concern. “I will,” she said as she stepped out into the backyard to head toward the designated meeting point, still smiling at the shocked look on Mule’s face.
**************************************************
JD steered the Impala around the corner and pulled up at the curb as he rolled down his window. “Need a lift?” He smirked to the waiting blond.
Holly circled the car to lean into the window. “I can’t believe you got your Uncle to give you his car. You have got to share that bit of manipulation.”
JD chuckled. “Look again.”
She stepped back and whistled. “Yours?” she asked and was rewarded with a big shit eating grin from JD. “Wow, Happy Graduation. Sorry didn’t get you anything,” she added as she slipped into the back seat.
He shrugged. “Trust me, you coming along is the perfect gift. So, let’s get this show on the road,” JD said.
“Hey, Uncle Richie,” Holly quipped acknowledging the man in the passenger seat for the first time.
Richie swiveled to look at her. “Uncle?”
Holly smiled. “Figured since I’m a Winchester that makes you my Uncle as much as JD’s.”
The Immortal smiled, obviously flattered by the affection the title implied. “Just so we’re clear. I am the adult in this car and you two will listen to me.”
Holly and JD’s eyes met in the rear view mirror they exchanged a knowing smile. “Whatever you say, Uncle Richie,” she confirmed.
Richie looked from one teen to the other. “I’m just kidding myself, aren’t I?”
“I won’t be any trouble I swear,” Holly said brightly. “Beside this isn’t a real hunt, so there’s no danger.”
Richie swung back in his seat to look out the front window and sighed. “Now she’s done it.”
“It’s not her fault, Uncle Richie,” JD smirked. “She’s never been hunting with us before.”
Holly laughed. “Guess the Winchester ‘luck’ isn’t limited to my reality.”
